Join us for screenings of He Named Me Malala at Southern New Hampshire University and Red River Theatres

In 2015, The World Economic Forum estimated that the gender gap wouldn't entirely close until 2133! This is why the theme of this year's  International Women's Day is Pledge for Parity - a promise to take concrete steps to close the gender gap and achieve gender parity more quickly. Given this theme, we are excited to host two screenings of He Named Me Malala, one on International Women's Day - Tuesday, March 8 - at Southern New Hampshire University and another on Wednesday, March 23 at Red River Theatres in Concord as part of our ongoing Crossroads International Film & Discussion series. REGISTER NOW!

"HE NAMED ME MALALA is an intimate portrait of Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Malala Yousafzai, who was targeted by the Taliban and severely wounded by a gunshot when returning home on her school bus in Pakistan’s Swat Valley. The then 15-year-old was singled out, along with her father, for advocating for girls’ education, and the attack on her sparked an outcry from supporters around the world. She miraculously survived and is now a leading campaigner for girls’  education globally as co-founder of the Malala Fund." Find out more about the screenings on our event page.

    High School Educators and Students:
Academic WorldQuest Registration Open until February 1 Winning Team Will Travel to Washington DC to Represent NH!

Don't miss out on this opportunity to learn more about the world, participate in a fun, low-pressure competition, and possibly win a trip to Washington D.C. to represent New Hampshire in the National Academic WorldQuest competition!

Academic WorldQuest, WACNH's newest education program, is a quiz-style, team competition testing high school students' knowledge of international affairs, geography, history and culture.  Teams compete by answering 10 rounds of multiple choice questions on critical global issues.  A study guide is provided with detailed resources on each of the categories to help students and the team adviser (usually a teacher) to prepare for the competition.  Questions for the competition are drawn from the resources in the study guide. The statewide competition will be held at SNHU on Saturday, March 5 at 10 AM.

Also at this year's competition, our keynote speaker, Deepika Kurup will tell the inspiring story of how she working to make the world a better place! Deepika, a former student at Nashua High School and current student at Harvard University, developed a simple and inexpensive water purification technique using solar energy.  For her invention, she was awarded first prize at the 2012 Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge and the 2014 U.S. Stockholm Junior Water Prize.  In January 2015, Deepika was named as one of Forbes' 30 under 30 in Energy.

We just extended the team registration deadline to Monday, February 1, so head over to our website for more information on how to register your school's team TODAY! The competition is made possible through support from the Mayer Foundation, Sidore Foundation and Southern New Hampshire University.

January's Cover to Cover  will feature Thomas W. Lippman on his new book  Hero of the Crossing: How Anwar Sadat and the 1973 War Changed the World. Join us on Monday,  January 11, at 2:00-2:30 PM ET.

    Register for the call

    Dial-in information for participants:

Please dial in shortly before 2:00 ET, as the prompts can take a minute or two:

    Access Number:  1-218-895-7963

    Passcode:  2015#

Thomas W. Lippman was a featured speaker at WACA's 2015 National  Conference. An adjunct scholar at the Middle East Institute, he specializes in Saudi Arabian affairs, U.S.-Saudi relations, and relations between the West and Islam. Lippman was stationed in the Middle East as a journalist during Sadat's presidency and lived in Egypt in the aftermath of the October War. He's the author of several previous books on the Middle East. (bio)

In 11 dramatic years, Anwar Sadat changed history--not just that of Egypt, or of the Middle East, but of the entire world. As the architect of the 1973 war against Israel, he gained the support of other Arab nations and inspired the oil embargo. Following the war, however, he forever ended Arab aspirations of unity by making peace with Israel. Sadat gave the West a crucial Cold War victory by jettisoning Egypt's alliance with the Soviet Union. His historic tenure resonates in the 21st century as the Islamic activists--whom he encouraged but who later opposed his turn toward Israel and ultimately played a role in his assassination--continue to foster activism, including the Muslim Brotherhood, today.

    Save the date!

February's Cover to Cover will feature innovation expert Alec Ross on his new book The Industries of the Future on Thursday, February 11, at 2:00-2:30 PM ET.  Ross served for four years as Senior Adviser for Innovation to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. He is currently a Distinguished Visiting Fellow at Johns Hopkins University and serves as an adviser to investors, corporations, and government leaders.

What a year of change 2015 has been for the World Affairs Council of New Hampshire!  From hosting our first ever full day summit in August, to reaching new milestones in our international visitor leadership program, it seems just like yesterday when we were planning for our exciting lineup of spring events, like the forum with the Editor of Foreign Policy magazine.

As we say goodbye to our 61st year of operation, we are looking ahead to many more great years to come.  The Council is working hard to create unique and interesting programs to give you insight and information about foreign affairs.

Without a doubt, our Diplomacy Begins Here Summit, held in August, was a shining moment for the Council.  Over 225 people attended events to learn about how New England is connected to the world and how to become more involved in and benefit from international exchange programs.  The CEO of Honest Tea, Seth Goldman, speaking on how his business builds goodwill for the US through their international dealings, was a highlight of the summit.

With your help, we can provide more opportunities for you and others to engage with the world:

    • More public programs that take you beyond the headlines with leading thinkers in foreign policy;
    • More connections with emerging international leaders to exchange best practices on issues such as democracy, sustainability and human rights; and
    • Better opportunities for local students and teachers to learn and teach about world affairs through hands-on experiences through Academic World Quest and the Model United Nations.

Please consider making an Annual Fund gift today!  This will allow us to continue to bring top level speakers to NH, creating a more informed citizenry.

Thank you so much for your continued support and we appreciate all you have given over the years.  The strength of this organization truly lives within people like you.

    ~With gratitude, Steve Solomon, President

Board Secretary Joan Reische (L) and Board President Kathryn Muirhead (R) were recognized for their years of service to the council.

At our Annual Meeting, held on June 15 at our office in the Ford House, we reflected on the World Affairs Council of New Hampshire's 60th year.  We worked harder than ever to expand our critical work across the state by holding numerous events, developing new education programs, and hosting 303 international visitors for professional development.
At the meeting, we also took time to recognize two board members who have greatly contributed to the success of the council in recent years.  Kathryn Muirhead was presented with a honorary gavel to thank her for her six years of service as the WACNH Board President.  Her term will end in September, when we will welcome Steven A. Solomon as the new President. Board Secretary Joan Reische was given the President's Award in recognition of her service to the Council.

We also welcomed a group of International Visitors from all over Europe to our meeting, which was followed a BBQ and potluck.  Despite the rainy weather, all managed to have a wonderful time!  Thanks to all members and friends who came out to celebrate yet another successful year!
All members should have received a copy of the 2014 Annual Report in their mailboxes. If not, please contact our office (council@wacnh.org or 603.314.7970). One correction to the report: Dan Scanlon, of Colliers International, should have been listed as a member.
