    USIP's 2018 #PeaceDayChallenge

The United States Institute of Peace's Peace Day Challenge coincides with the International Day of Peace on September 21 to raise the profile of the day and affirm peace as a real alternative to the violence we see every day in the news.

It is all about inspiring a day of action, focused on building peace through real-life activities, and then sharing on social media at #PeaceDayChallenge.

This summer, USIP collaborated with Scholastic to create a new Poster Teaching Guide for the Peace Day Challenge in 2018. This is being distributed to 50,000 middle school classrooms across the U.S. to support educators and their students in taking action on the International Day of Peace and continuing their learning and engagement all year long.

Here is what Councils need to effectively participate in USIP's Peace Day Challenge this year:

    ·     The website www.peacedaychallenge.org is the hub for information, action ideas, and other resources to support engagement in the Peace Day Challenge.

    ·     For more on USIP's public education work, click here.

Call for Poster Proposals: 2019 Global Ties U.S. National Meeting

The Poster Session is an opportunity for academics, scholars, students, and researchers to present their work to a global network of public and private sector partners. View last year’s examples.

Please read the FAQs and send in your proposal by October 1 through the online application link. For any questions, contact Franzi Rook at frook@globaltiesus.org

    Stratfor Worldview: Fourth-Quarter Forecast

    Read...and then subscribe!

The White House's Enduring Gamble Over Trade Policy. As the White House finalizes a deal to preserve the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the Trump administration will increase trade risks elsewhere. China will have to weather an even bigger squall of tariffs this quarter as trade negotiations stall out. European efforts to neutralize the U.S. auto tariff threat will drag beyond the quarter, but ultimately fail.

A Stressful Period for Emerging Markets. Higher oil prices and further monetary tightening in the United States will continue to place strain on emerging markets: For Argentina, complying with the International Monetary Fund's requirements will come at heavy political cost; India and South Africa's populist drives ahead of elections will come at the expense of financial prudence; the Brazilian economy hangs in the balance of a highly fragmented political race; Turkey, by far the most fragile of the lot, will see its economic crisis deepen as a result of political resistance to reform, magnified by worsening relations with the United States.

Russian Weakness Will Be Exposed in Syria. The limits of the Kremlin's influence in Syria will be exposed as Moscow tries to advance a proposal to end the civil war, thereby containing Iran and mitigating Russia's own risk in the conflict zone. While Moscow seeks to draw Washington into broader negotiations, increased U.S. sanctions on Russia this quarter will sour the negotiating climate, though some progress on arms control is possible.

Global Trends. In today's world, nations are becoming increasingly interconnected by air, land, sea and cyberspace. As globalization has knitted countries and continents closer together, the borders of the map and the barriers of geography have been rendered, in some ways, obsolete. Now events in one region can more easily have consequences in another, at times even rippling across the globe. We explore those with the greatest impact on international decision-making during the forecast period below.

    September Newsletter

President's Letter; Council of the Month: Santa Fe; Early-bird Conference Deadline; Cover to Cover; Engage America Grant Programs; New WACA Interns; Council Jobs, and News!

    President's Letter

Dear Council Leaders, Friends, and Supporters:

The stakes have rarely been higher for the news media. Fifteen to 20 years ago, a top concern of journalists was how the Internet and new technologies would change the ad-driven business model that supported news gathering and delivery, and whether their companies and jobs would continue to exist.

These days, as attacks from an American president on what he deems “fake news” increase and, more dangerously, morph into an authoritarian assault targeting journalists as “the enemy of the people,” the threat is far greater – to democracy itself. Globally, this worrisome trend emboldens those in power where protections for reporters were already weak; for established and emerging democracies, it erodes discourse, citizenship, and governance.

On Monday, a Myanmar judge found two Reuters reporters, Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, guilty of breaching a law on state secrets and jailed them for seven years. The Washington Post, in an editorial the day before, decried the imprisonment and killing of journalists “to smother vital truths."

When President Trump’s lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, says in a televised NBC interview that “Truth isn’t truth,” this is not a “business as usual” environment for the Fourth Estate. Chuck Todd, moderator of Meet the Press and political director at NBC News, just penned a piece for the Atlantic, “It’s Time for the Press to Stop Complaining - And to Start Fighting Back.”

Meanwhile, New Yorker magazine is now caught up in controversy for inviting and suddenly disinviting Steve Bannon as a headline speaker for its eponymous Festival. Vox today carried a worthwhile take on this New Yorker-Bannon story and the double bind journalists find themselves in today. Councils could face similar perils when it comes to engaging certain speakers for their events.

The WACA National Office urges courage, and we commend the Santa Fe Council on International Relations – our Council of the Month – for putting together a timely and aptly-named conference in December: Journalism Under Fire.

    Yours truly,

Bill Clifford, WACA President and CEO

The Fighters is a tour de force, a portrait of modern warfare that parts from slogans. It does for these troops what Stephen Ambrose did for the G.I.s of WWII and what Michael Herr did for the grunts in Vietnam. The Fighters presents a human side of the long arc of two wars, told with the empathy and understanding of an author who is himself an infantry veteran.

    Weekly World News Update

Remembering John McCain; Rohingya Crisis One Year On; Uganda's Crackdown; Land Reform in South Africa; Australia's New PM; Taiwan’s Allies Dwindle; Macron’s Call for European Defense; U.S. Foreign Aid Rollback?

    Quotes of the Week

"We weaken our greatness when we confuse our patriotism with tribal rivalries that have sown resentment and hatred and violence in all the corners of the globe. We weaken it when we hide behind walls, rather than tear them down, when we doubt the power of our ideals, rather than trust them to be the great force for change they have always been."

-- Sen. John McCain’s former presidential campaign manager and family spokesperson Rick Davis, reading aloud the text of the senator’s farewell statement at the Arizona State Capitol.

At that time I liked him personally for his toughness and strong stance. Later on, when he became a U.S. Senator, he and Senator John Kerry greatly contributed to promote Việt Nam-U.S. relations so I was very fond of him. When I learnt about his death early this morning, I feel very sad. I would like to send condolences to his family. I think it’s the same feeling for all Vietnamese people as he has greatly contributed to the development of Việt Nam-U.S. relations."

-- Colonel Trần Trọng Duyệt, the man in charge of the prison where John McCain was held as a POW, speaking with Viet Nam News having learned of Senator McCain's death on Saturday.
