World Affairs Council Celebrates Kitchen Table Diplomacy

In honor of the 15th anniversary of the International Visitors Program in NH, Council launches cookbook featuring recipes from around the world; NH Food Bank chefs will demonstrate recipes at special event on Tuesday, December 12 in Manchester

MANCHESTER- After 15 years as part of the U.S. State Department’s premiere professional exchange program, the World Affairs Council of New Hampshire has hosted more than 2,200 emerging international leaders from 175 different countries. Now, the Council is launching an international cookbook to celebrate the volunteers who host the visitors for dinner in the Granite State and encourage new citizen diplomats to join the cross-cultural dialogue.

“’Food Diplomacy’ is one of the best ways for people to learn about other cultures,” said Tim Horgan, World Affairs Council Associate Director, who has managed the International Visitors Leadership Program in Manchester for the past 8 years. “From the spicy chilies of Central America to the flavorful Masalas of Southern Asia, food can provide an entryway to experience new countries and cultures.”

“Sharing a meal provides even more opportunities to connect with people from around the world and opens the door to true cultural exchanges. The World Affairs Council of New Hampshire, through this cookbook, hopes to continue to open these pathways for local families to learn about the diversity of the world, from the comfort of their own home.”

The Council will hold a launch party for the “Kitchen Table Diplomacy” cookbook on Tuesday, December 12 at the NH Food Bank. Chefs from the food bank’s culinary job training program will demonstrate a few of the international recipes and tickets include a copy of the cookbook. For more information, visit www.wacnh.org/eventcalendar or call 603.314.79070.

“The support of our many volunteer dinner hosts is changing minds from around the world and has a direct impact on building relationships between countries,” Horgan said. “Without a doubt, their efforts are helping make the world smaller and friendlier and we look forward to bringing new volunteers into the program!”

The World Affairs Council of New Hampshire is one of more than 90 community organizations around the country that host visitors through the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs International Visitors Leadership Program- the department's premier professional exchange program.

This program brings approximately 4,000 foreign leaders and specialists to the United States for short-term (one to three week) professional programs. Participants in the national program, who are leaders and decision-makers in their home countries; travel as individuals or as part of pre-arranged groups.

Some of the groups are fully funded by the U.S. Congress through its appropriation to the U.S. Department of State, while others receive little or no financial support from U.S. government. The national program constitutes a major component of this country's public diplomacy efforts to foster mutual understanding and cooperation between the United States and other countries.

Through a long-standing public-private sector partnership, the U.S. Government works with national private, nonprofit organizations and a network of volunteer-based organizations that are members of Global Ties U.S., a nonprofit organization established in 1961. Together, these organizations design and implement quality, experiential programs for distinguished International Visitors. Through its grassroots network, the National program involves over 80,000 volunteers each year as citizen diplomats who develop enduring international linkages.

Global Business Summit to address New Hampshire's role in International Trade

International trade is a critical piece of New Hampshire's economic success: exports of New Hampshire products topped $4 billion last year and trade supports nearly 25% of the state's jobs. How will the current political climate impact free and fair trade? At the World Affairs Council of New Hampshire’s Global Business Summit on November 8 at Southern New Hampshire University, Ambassador Rufus Yerxa will outline the benefits of an open, rules-based world economy and the impact of international trade on businesses, government and communities.

He has been in key policymaking and management roles in Congress, the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) and the World Trade Organization (WTO), and also spent several years in private law practice and the corporate world. As Deputy Director General of the WTO from 2002 to 2013 he helped to broaden its membership and strengthen its role as the principal rules-based institution governing world trade.

Journalist Lisa Palmer will address the link between climate change & food security in Durham and Manchester on Tuesday, October 17

Journalist Lisa Palmer has traveled the world documenting the cutting-edge innovations of people on the front lines of fighting the food gap. She will share the story of the epic journey to solve the imperfect relationship between two of our planet’s greatest challenges: climate change and global hunger, as chronicled in her new book, Hot, Hungry Planet. Palmer will appear as part of UNH's International Seminar at 12:40 PM in Durham and then at UNH Manchester for Global Tipping Points at 6 PM.

NH link: Did you know our state’s farms have been increasing (including a big rise in young farmers) and 30% of agricultural sales to the public come from local farms? But, a longer growing season due to climate change could mean higher heat stress and new pressure from invasive weeds and pests.

Series presented in partnership with UNH and UNH Manchester's homeland security, history, humanities and politics and society programs; Program partner: League of Conservation Voters

     Diplomacy & Development in Washington

A New Hampshire delegation, including three World Affairs Council members, attended the USGLC Summit in June.

The USGLC State Leaders Summit, held in June in Washington D.C., is a yearly gathering for foreign policy briefings and meetings with Members of Congress with the goal of shaping the future of American foreign policy to include America's civilian-led tools of diplomacy and development. This year, Council President Steve Solomon, Board Member George Bruno, and member Larry Welch were part of the state delegation at the Summit.

Ambassador Bruno and Ambassador Thomas Hull, a Council member, were also two of the163 former U.S. ambassadors who sent a letter to the U.S. House urging them to support full funding for the U.S. State Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The letter is significant both for the historic number of signatures and the broad bipartisan support for educational and cultural exchanges it displays.

“We are former United States Ambassadors to countries across the globe. While we may differ in political ideology, we write today united with one voice to ask that the Senate and House Appropriations Committees support full funding in fiscal year 2018 for the Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The unprecedented 55 percent cut called for in the Administration’s full budget would jeopardize our nation’s public diplomacy efforts,” wrote the ambassadors.

Now, more than ever, we need to stand up and speak out in support of the country's international diplomacy programs like the Council's own International Visitors Program! Thanks to everyone who took part in our most recent advocacy efforts!

    Global Tipping Points Returns September:

    THINK GLOBALLY & ACT LOCALLY

We will be hosting another season of Global Tipping Points this fall with our series partner, UNH Manchester. The theme of the series will allow us to take a look at how widespread challenges are inspiring local innovations, from a variety of different perspectives.

The series kicks off on Tuesday, September 19 with Elmira Bayrasli, co-founder of Foreign Policy Interrupted and a lecturer at New York University.  She will speak about how hardship and marginalization may prove to be even greater "mothers of invention" in the 21st century than First World social and economic privilege. She is the author of, From the Other Side of the World: Extraordinary Entrepreneurs, Unlikely Places, which will be on sale courtesy of Gibson's Bookstore. This event is part of "Welcoming Manchester" week, a part of the Welcoming America initiative.

The series continues on Tuesday, October 17 with Lisa Palmer, a journalist reporting on energy, climate change, the environment, and sustainable business. She has traveled the world documenting the cutting-edge innovations of the people on the front lines of fighting the food gap. She will share the story of the epic journey solve the imperfect relationship between two of our planet's greatest challenges: climate change and global hunger, as chronicled in her new book Hot, Hungry Planet, which will be on sale courtesy of Gibson's Bookstore.

We will finish the series on Monday, November 13 with Luis Jimenez, an expert on Latin American politics. Mexico provides more than 90 percent of America’s heroin. As an addiction epidemic ravages New Hampshire, communities across the border have also paid a price as violence soars.  Professor Jimenez, Political Science Professor at the Univ. of Massachusetts, Boston, will discuss how U.S. policy in Latin America has impacted the drug trade and how both the US and Mexico can work together to combat the heroin epidemic.

All events will begin at 6 PM in the Multipurpose Room at UNH Manchester, (88 Commercial Street). Global Tipping Points events are free and open to the public, but advanced registration is requested.

Board Members Honored at Annual Meeting

This year's Annual Meeting & BBQ was held on June 12 at Southern New Hampshire University. This meeting is a time for us to reflect on the past year and to thank our board, members, and friends of the council for helping us meet our mission.

This year, the President's Award was given to Irja Cilluffo, a board member over the past 12 years, for her service and support. One of her many contributions has been through her love of photography - you may have seen her behind her camera at one of our events! We also recognized outgoing board members Peter Schmidt, Karen Erickson, and Gail Garceau.
