Drinks and diplomacy introduction

The Drinks & Diplomacy Podcast is the result of a two year effort to pull together fun, engaging, informative, and important conversations about how the world works. By listening to these episodes you will come away with a better understanding of key issues, players, challenges, and opportunities to engage and understand your role in global conversations.

You may wonder about the title of this podcast, with Drinks coming before Diplomacy. Each episode kicks off with a conversation about a different drink (some alcoholic, others not) that the hosts and guests look to tie to the topic at hand. This allows for a relaxed approach to what can sometimes be a dry topic and makes for an easier entry point for everyone to engage in this podcast.

These conversations are designed to provide everyone with the opportunity to better understand these key issues, whether you have studied international affairs or are just someone interested in learning more about the world. Hopefully, you will not only enjoy these episodes, but will also be inspired to get more involved in local conversations about global issues.

Hosts
Tim Horgan, Executive Director of the World Affairs Council of New Hampshire

Tim started his career with the World Affairs Council of New Hampshire in November of 2009 as an AmeriCorps member. During his year of service, he took on the international visitor exchange programs and was able to grow the grant to a point where the Council could hire him full time. For the next eight years, Tim continued to run, grow, and expand the quality and breadth of these exchanges, peaking at over 350 visitors hosted in one year. In 2013, the National Council of International Visitors (now Global Ties US) honored Tim with the Programmer of the Year award in recognition of his high-quality programs welcoming international visitors to the New Hampshire community.  In 2018, Tim took over the role of executive director of the World Affairs Council of New Hampshire. Under his leadership, the Council has continued its growth and professionalization of its efforts. He successfully led the organization through the pandemic, pioneering virtual programming and implementing new initiatives.

Since August of 2019, Tim has continued to host, manage, produce, and edit the Global in the Granite State Podcast. This monthly audio-based program has engaged thousands of people across the world in accessible and engaging discussions on top international issues.

Tim graduated from the University of Connecticut with a degree in Latin American Studies and a concentration in Political Science. He completed study abroad in Monterrey, Mexico, crediting the experience as one of the most formative and powerful experiences in his life. He has also traveled to southern Mexico, Argentina, Austria, the Czech Republic, and multiple trips to Canada.

Andrea Vanessa Castillo, Policy and Advocacy Manager at The Oregon Latino Health Coalition

As a Chicana born and raised in Hillsboro, Oregon, Andrea has worked to weave advocacy, belonging, and community building everywhere she goes. She has two Bachelor’s degrees, one in Cultural Anthropology and the other General Social Science from the University of Oregon. When she wasn’t in class, she was engaged in student-led organizations like MEChA de UO and the ASUO student senate body working to increase representation, retention of, and resources for Latine and students of Color on campus.

Andrea then went into Foreign Policy education and Citizen Diplomacy through her work at WorldOregon where she had the opportunity to connect leaders from around the world to leaders here at home through U.S. Department of State sponsored International Exchange Programs. Andrea witnessed first-hand the grassroots, community-led, and advocacy centered efforts from across Oregon as well as the strength that comes from bridging international and cross-cultural perspectives in navigating challenges both here and abroad.

Outside of work, spending time with family and friends is a huge priority. You might find her in a local cafe reading a book or crocheting, she might be at 53rd playing tennis with friends or roller skating, or she’ll be hosting a game night with her family.
