Join us to celebrate our organization’s sixty-second year at the Council’s Annual Meeting and a community BBQ on Wednesday, June 8 at 5 PM at Southern New Hampshire University’s Academic Center.  The Annual Meeting is free and open to all, but only WACNH dues-paying members are eligible to vote. At the meeting, members will vote on the slate of trustees for three-year terms on the Board of Directors (2016-2019), and a bylaw amendment.  We’ll finish up with this year’s President’s Award.

The BBQ will directly follow the meeting.  This is a wonderful opportunity to get to know WACNH staff, board members and members.  Dinner includes BBQ chicken and beef tips, baked beans, corn on the cob, watermelon, pasta and potato salad, corn bread and apple crisp. Weather permitting, we will be able to enjoy our dinner outside on the Academic Center’s patio.  Tickets for non-members are $15.

Welcome Summer Intern Erica!

Meet our summer intern! Erica Stieper is a rising senior at Virginia Tech, majoring in International Studies and minoring in Spanish. In 2018, she will complete a Masters Degree in Political Science. This summer, Erica will be working to inform our Facebook followers about global affairs and New Hampshire’s involvement at the international level. She will also research unique and inspirational professionals for the speaker series this fall. 

Erica is devoted to world affairs and has previously been involved with the International Relations Organization at Virginia Tech, debating at a Mock Arab League Conference in Washington D.C., and spending time discussing global issues with her colleagues. Erica contributed to the social media advertising for Relay For Life at Virginia Tech, which qualifies her to navigate the WACNH’s Facebook page. She enjoys discovering, reading and sharing diverse news articles with Facebook followers in hopes that they will continue to make people aware of current global issues as well as the colorful cultural diversity of the world.

Cultural diversity is another passion of Erica’s. For the past four months, she has immersed herself in the Spanish culture, attending the University of Salamanca in Salamanca, Spain. Erica fell in love with the Spanish lifestyle, gastronomy, language, and people. When she was not in class, she spent her time playing soccer with locals by the Rio Tormes, trying new cuisine at restaurants around town, and exploring the Plaza Mayor, the Cathedral and the Monastery. Erica took full advantage of her study abroad experience by visiting eight different countries and using her time to understand the multitude of lifestyles that exist in Europe.

In addition to interning at WACNH this summer, Erica will also be working in Wells, Maine at the Scoop Deck ice cream shop. While in Maine, she enjoys spending her days running, hiking, or relaxing on the beach and, scooping ice cream with her friends at night.      

Council Board Member Gives Commencement Speech at Hartwick College

Council Board Member George Bruno gave the 2016 commencement speech at Hartwick College on May 21. A member of the Hartwick College Class of 1964, Ambassador Bruno is an attorney with experience as a lawyer and diplomat in more than 50 countries.

In Bruno’s address to the graduating students, he reminded them that, “With the skills and knowledge you have acquired over the past four years, you have both the responsibility and ability to begin anew, and to continue to make ours a better world.”

The third and final "World Affairs at the Library" program on May 17 featured speaker Dr. Sinan Ciddi, an expert on Turkish domestic politics and foreign policy. A big thanks to event co-sponsor, the Portsmouth Public Library and to our publicity partner, the Turkish Cultural Center of NH. 

Dr. Katrina Lantos Swett, of the Lantos Foundation, whose Hungarian parents were survivors of the Holocaust, spoke briefly after the screening of Son of Saul  at Red River Theatres on May 18 as part of our Crossroad International Film and Discussion series.

WACNH welcomed a group of five legislators from the National Parliament of Kyrgyzstan, visiting NH through the Open World Leadership Program, at a special reception at our offices on May 19.

Press and Public Diplomacy: June 13 A group of 5 visitors from Ukraine will visit New Hampshire for the day to learn about government outreach to the public. 

  Librarians as Defenders of Intellectual Property Rights: June 28 - July 2  - A group of 9 librarians from Barbados will visit the state to learn about intellectual property rights, as they pertain to libraries. 

Politics and Trade: A Project for First Time Members of Parliament: July 2 - 6 - A group of 7 first-time Members of the Indian Parliament will visit New Hampshire to learn about the intersection of politics and trade. 

 US Elections: A Project for Young Political Leaders: July 22- 26 - A split of 8 participants from a larger group will visit New Hampshire to learn about elections in the state.  The meetings will focus on how State, Federal, and Local elections are managed and carried out.

Rear Admiral Titley Visits Manchester West STEAM Students

Before speaking at our Global Forum, Dr. David Titley made a special visit to Manchester High School West to meet with 75 Freshman and Sophomore students in the STEAM Ahead program, a comprehensive educational initiative that focuses on science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. Dr. Titley spoke about his career path, meteorology and the Navy, and his current research on climate change.

WACNH welcomes Open World delegation from Kyrgyzstan

From May 19 – 25, a group of five legislators from the National Parliament of Kyrgyzstan will visit New Hampshire through the Open World Leadership Program at the Library of Congress. This six day visit will provide them with an in-depth view into New Hampshire politics and government.  Meetings are being arranged with top government officials to exchange ideas on legislation, procurement, elections, campaigns, and other topics. They will also have the opportunity to meet with several candidates for different elected positions. 

Another great component of their trip is a home stay with a local family. 4 local families have graciously opened their homes to these Members of Parliament to better show them everyday New Hampshire life. They share meals together, exchange ideas, and provide insights into each others’ cultures; truly a learning experience for everyone involved. When they return home after the trip, the group will have the opportunity to share what they learned with the other Members of Parliament and their constituents. This program will foster better relations between our countries and provide valuable professional development for the delegation.

Souhegan High School Represents NH at National Academic World Quest Competition in Washington D.C.

    Congratulations to the 2016 New Hampshire Academic World Quest Champions from Souhegan High School! The team- students Hannah Gillis, Callie Cinque, Claire Foley and Zack Anton- competed against the best of the best at the national AWQ competition in Washington, D.C. on April 23 and held their own! The team's coach was Matt McDonald and teacher Sarah Barbato accompanied them to Washington. In addition to the competition at the National Press Club, the weekend was full of unique opportunities such as a welcome reception at the Embassy of the Sultanate of Oman and visits to national museums and memorials. Congratulations, Souhegan!

Genieve Abdo's talk, "A House Divided: Islam in Today's Middle East," was presented by the Council in partnership with UNH Manchester, and support from New Hampshire Humanities. Council Director Takes Part in 'Ukraine in Washington Day' at Capitol

World Affairs Council Executive Director Anna Berry was privileged to attend an official address from Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko to the World Affairs Councils of America at the U.S. Capitol last week. In America on the eve of the international Nuclear Security Summit, Poroshenko called on the U.S. to continue sanctions on Russia, noting his country's abandonment of its nuclear arsenal in the 90s in exchange for security assurances. Celebrate Earth Day with our International Visitors on April 23!

Celebrate this Earth Day by meeting our International Visitors at the beach for a clean up!

A Russian delegation is visiting NH to learn more about about Arctic environmental preservation and oil spill clean ups. While the group will be busy meeting with experts in the field, they are planning to volunteer a few hours of their time at the Blue Ocean Society's Earth Day Beach Clean Up at the Seacoast Science Center in Rye at 11AM on Saturday, April 23, rain or shine.  We encourage all WACNH member and friends to meet our visitors there and clean up for a great cause!  

  Council Vice President Travels to Brazil with Global Education Fellowship

"This fellowship has been one of the highmarks of my professional teaching career," Peter Schmidt (center) said, with Brazilian students.

This past year, Peter Schmidt, WACNH’s Vice President and Education Committee Chair and Spanish teacher at Pinkerton Academy, was awarded a fellowship in Global Education with the U.S. Department of State. Pete was selected from over 400 national applicants for only 80 openings in the Teachers for Global Classrooms Program (TGC). The TGC is a specialized training program for K-12 teachers in the study, practice, and theory of Global Education. The year-long fellowship program include an overseas teaching assignment location. Pete was chosen to join the Brazilian delegation last summer.

As a capstone project for his fellowship, Pete developed a global education resource guide website to help state educators incorporate global competencies into their teaching and curriculum: Globalocity: A Global Education Resource Guide. The website is full of resources, lesson plan ideas, publications, program and project development, global technology implementation, travel blogs, and more.  Click here to read more about his trip.

Invite the World Over for Dinner! Host one of our International Visitors Groups

Looking for a way to meet new people and engage with the world? Then it’s time to get involved in our Home Hospitality Program!  We have a steady stream of international visitors coming to our state for professional development through the State Department’s International Visitor Leadership Program.  While they are here, they love to meet local people and get a flavor for life in NH.   We currently have two groups coming in April:

• Friday, April 22 or Saturday, April 23 – Host a group of 8 people for dinner from Russia studying Arctic Environmental Protection.  The group will be staying in Portsmouth, so this is a great opportunity for our seacoast members to get involved.
• Thursday, April 28 or Friday, April 29 – Host a group of 6 people for dinner from Thailand studying the U.S. Presidential Elections. Preferably, we are looking for hosts in the seacoast area or near Concord.

Leadership Mission to Israel

The World Affairs Councils of America is pleased to announce that the America-Israel Friendship League will host a WACA Leadership Mission to Israel from June 2 to June 10.

The Leadership Mission will be comprised of an AIFL escort, WACA President Bill Clifford, and up to 14 delegates from the Council network. 

This Leadership Mission to Israel will focus on a variety of contemporary issues, including Middle East regional affairs, Israeli politics and diplomacy, counter-terrorism, immigration and refugees, innovation and entrepreneurship (alternative energy, IT, health care), and religious diversity. Details
