ABOUT THE FILM:
One family, three generations, facing globalization in Indonesia.
Twelve years ago, Dutch filmmaker Retel Helmrich decided to visit Indonesia, the birthplace of his Dutch father and Indonesian mother, looking for inspiration. The trip ignited his fascination with the country and he started filming the Shamshudin family living in a Jakarta slum. He followed them as the country shook off the rule of president Suharto (THE EYE OF THE DAY), experienced a rise of Islamic power (SHAPE OF THE MOON) and eventually nascent democracy, corruption and a widening income gap (POSITION AMONG THE STARS).

“Position Among the Stars” focuses on three generations of an Indonesian family from the slums of Jakarta whose challenges are a microcosm of the country as a whole: corruption, class and generational differences, and religious conflict between Christianity and Islam.

Watch the trailer here. 115 minutes.

ABOUT THE EXPERT:

Plymouth State University Professor Peng-Khuan Chong is a professor of political science with expertise in the politics and culture of Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia, as well as the politics and economics of globalization. Learn more here.
